Decided to go to Lyme today as it's another place in an area I don't often visit. Very beautiful house and grounds which was used in the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice in 1995. (Alas no Mr Darcy arising from the lake in his wet white shirt today!). On the way back I stopped off in Buxton. As a spa town it has some nice architecture and gardens but unfortunately today it started to rain so it was just a quick look in the shops and no photos.

Went to Quarry Bank Mill today. I have been wanting to go for a while but its not in an area (just south of Manchester airport) that I usually visit. It took about 50 minutes to get there and the sat nav took me past some seriously posh houses, all gated and worth millions. I think I've discovered where all the soccer players live in Cheshire! Quarry Bank Mill was very interesting and there is a lot to see. The mill itself with working machinery and the biggest water wheel I have ever seen, the mill owners house, the gardens, the village and the apprentice house where the little children (aged 9 and up) lived while they worked in the mill. I would definitely recommend a visit. Have manged to escape for a few days in the van. I am staying at Blackshaw Moor, just north of Leek and south of Buxton. Nice pretty countryside site. I have stayed here before but it was a long time ago. It's a good base for exploring places round about.
Got held up on the way here for an hour and a half as there was an accident just before M6 J15 where I was coming off. A car and a coach had collided. We were going nowhere so everyone got out and enjoyed the sunshine. Hopefully there were no serious injuries. Sightly hectic day today. Up at 6.00 to do a car boot. Have been saving things up from around the house and from clearing the shed. Arrived just before 7.00 and sold quite a few of the tools straight away. After that it was steady and I took a respectable £60 which wasn't bad considering the dearest thing on the stall was £3! Everyone started packing up around 11.30 which was great as I needed to be over at Richard and Debbie's for the Pelsall carnival for 1.00. Olivia was supposed to be doing a dance routine but it unfortunately was cancelled because there was a shower of rain and they were concerned about them slipping over. The rain stopped though and the floats came past. The theme from the school where Olivia goes and Debbie works was 'Under the sea'. It was nice to go as not many places have carnivals any more. There were lots of stalls and a fair on the common. Happy Birthday Jackie! Another busy week. Popped over to see Richard and Debbie on Sunday to take some things they wanted out of the shed, gave the shed another coat of preservative on Monday and spent the rest of the week tidying, cleaning and shopping. Most of the furniture is now back where it should be and the bathroom is in its summer colours. I had quite a lot of pieces of carpet left so I thought it would be good to get them bound and use as mats to protect the new carpet. However it was 75p per foot to get them bound which does not sound a lot but would have come to over £50 so I decided to seal the edges with the hot melt glue gun instead which worked out quite well. As the weather was forecast to be nice for the weekend Mark suggested getting the vans out. I had Scarlett coming to stay so I picked her up from the station on Friday afternoon and we spent the weekend in the van which was very nice. We ate outside and read our books, chatted with Mark and Michelle and then on Saturday afternoon went into Stratford. It was very busy and very hot so we popped in a few shops to admire their wares and keep cool in the air conditioning! Tea at Carluccios and then Measure for Measure at the RSC.
On Sunday morning Scarlett and I went for a nice walk and then I dropped her back at the station in the afternoon. A very pleasant and relaxing weekend so I decided to stay another night. I spent the evening reading, knitting and watching 'The Lady Vanishes'. |
