Salisbury and Stonehenge

I couldn't really visit this part of the country without going to Stonehenge as I have never been. The National Trust handbook advises that you book in advance so I went online this morning before I set out and managed to get a place at 3.30pm (it is very popular). I decided to go to Salisbury in the morning so looked up the nearest Park and Ride and headed off.

Salisbury is an interesting town with a river running through the middle and the cathedral square is lovely. There is a National Trust property in the square called Mompesson House so I popped in for a look round. It was for a time the home of the Bishop of Salisbury and houses an impressive collection of old cut glass.

Michelle, check out the crochet bedspread!
Stonehenge was very busy. A shuttle bus takes you from the visitor centre to the stones (or you can walk but it is quite a long way). The stones are very impressive but the actual size of the circle was smaller than I expected. A brass marker set into the ground marks the direction of the midsummer sunrise and the midwinter sunset. Apologies for the slightly drunken nature of some of the shots, I was trying to take with one hand while I shielded the lens from the bright sun. It was also very windy.
